Starter Kit and Recommended Materials
Before the expected last frost in late May, participants will be receiving the following starter kit:
7-gallon fabric planters (x6)
Seedlings
2-3 tomato seedlings
4-6 lettuce starts
2-4 parsley bunch starts
2-4 basil bunch starts
Small seed packet samples for direct sow
Radish seeds
Lettuce seeds
Herb seeds
Flower seeds
Participants may source these materials to go with their starter kit:
Soil - for six 7-gallon planters you need approximately ~150L of soil. You can purchase either two 85-L bags, or one 113L bag + another smaller bag of soil.
Pro Mix 85-L (x2)
Pro Mix 113L (x1) + Pro Mix 85-L (x1)
Fertilizer
Compost - this is optional and more ideal for those who need to amend backyard soil, or if the soil/container mix you are using does not have compost mixed.
Large Watering Can (or just use a hose if you’re lucky to have one!)
A 2-L empty pop bottle can be re-used for watering as well
Trellising - for tomato plants or other vining vegetables like cucumber.
Hand tools
Shovel
Cultivator
Here are some other cost-friendly ideas for gardening:
Re-use buckets for planters instead - remember to drill a few holes in the bottom to allow drainage.
Dollarama often has decent quality planters and tools for cheap.
Re-use yogurt cups and red beverage cups for seedlings.
